Extra classes in public junior high schools were banned by the government in 2017 for the reason that most teachers at the junior high schools are charging students exorbitant fees making some students drop out of school.
But looking at the current situation now at junior high schools in the country there is the need for something extra to be done to teach students at the junior high schools. One of the reasons why some private schools perform better than some public schools is these extra classes which most parents whose children are at the private schools accept to pay.
If the government thinks teachers are charging students exorbitant fees for using their extra time to teach students then this does not call for a ban on extra classes in public basic schools.
However, there should be a conversation between the government, teachers, and parents so that extra work must not come at a cost to the students or the parents but it should be fully funded by the government if they think teachers are charging students exorbitant fees. Extra class’s benefits to students outweigh the fees government thinks teachers are charging the students hence the need for it to be reintroduced in public junior high schools in the country.
Taking a queue from what the government has done to senior high schools teachers the same thing should apply to the junior high school’s teachers. Extra classes were equally banned at public senior high schools in the country but the government took over the burdens of students paying the extra fees and teachers are now been paid intervention allowance for doing extra classes and other works in the schools.
But when it comes to the junior high school level, extra classes have only been banned with little or no effort on the government to find an alternative solution to this. Teachers at the junior high schools level also do extra work which they are not even paid off. The government must also introduce these extra classes back and introduce intervention allowance for those teachers.
