Management of the Ghana Education Service has stated that some teachers do not follow the due process before they apply for upgrading.
Management has noted that some teachers after completing their diploma Education program from colleges of education and immediately after obtaining their appointment letter from Ghana Education service quickly get themselves enrolled into short courses to get their degrees.
After obtaining their degrees they do not wait for the right year they will qualify for upgrading which as required by GES a teacher after receiving an appointment he or she has to work for three years before he or she will qualify to go for further studies. Meaning that as a teacher after working for three years and going for further studies for additional three years making a total of six years before you will be qualified for upgrading.
According to Ges guidelines Teachers need to always have to cross-check in the given table below to see whether they have qualified for upgrading or not before the go ahead to apply for upgrading.
Certificate | Year obtained | Year of Application for Upgrading |
Diploma in Basic Education | 2014 | 2020 |
Diploma in Basic Education | 2015 | 2021 |
Diploma in Basic Education | 2016 | 2022 |
Diploma in Basic Education | 2017 | 2023 |
Diploma in Basic Education | 2018 | 2024 |
Note: some teachers have obtained their diploma in Basic Education two to three years before obtaining their appointment letters from the Ghana Education service, with these category of Teachers, Regional Directors are to always take the year the teacher was given appointment letter and not the year the teacher obtained the Diploma in Basic Education certificate.
Regional directors are encourage to always cross check the timeline in other not to give Teachers who are not qualified but applying for upgrading false hope.
