GH¢509.55 deducted from teachers PDA contained interest of the money used to fund the laptops – Teacher unions

The Government of Ghana has paid Teachers their professional allowance together with the November 2021 salaries. The majority of the teachers are worried about the deduction that has taken place on their allowance.

Most teachers are of the view that the 30% cost of the laptops will cost as much as GH¢509.55. This is because when you take 30% of Gh¢1550 as the total price of the laptops it will be GH¢465 and not GH¢509.55.

When the Ghana National Association of Teachers GNAT, National Association of Graduate Teachers NAGRAT, and Coalition of Concern Teachers Ghana CCTGH wrote to the Ghana Education Service and the Ministry of Education requesting for them to provide teachers with laptops they were told that the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service cannot get money to pre-finance the production of the laptops.

According to Stephen Denu the founder of the Innovative teacher union, the leaders of the three Teacher unions came back to the Ghana Education Service and the Ministry of Education with the idea that they have gotten money to sponsor the production of the one teacher one laptop.

The reason why the Ministry of Education always state that the price of the laptops is GH¢1550 and the leaders of the various teacher unions especially the president of the National Association of Graduate Teachers NAGRAT Mr. Angel Carbonu will quote different price is that the teacher unions contracted a loan from Teachers Tier 2 fund and for that matter the part of the GH¢509.55 is the interest of the loan GNAT, NAGRAT and CCTGH took from the Tire 2 fund.
