Grant teachers the 20% COLA allowance before the end of June or face strike action – GNAT

The management of the Ghana National Association of Teachers GNAT has asked the government to grant teachers their 20% COLA allowance before the end of June or risk facing strike action of about 240,000 teachers.

According to the General Secretary of GNAT Mr. Thomas Musah, the current habitual idle attitude of the government is affecting the small salaries members of GNAT are taking home every month.

During an interview with the labour correspondent Daniel Opoku at TV3 news monitored by the Educegh team, the general secretary of GNAT Mr. Thomas Musah said the inability of the government to pay teachers Cost of living Allowance COLA has directly affected the necessities of life.

“Things are now very difficult. I have spoken about this thing and I have been compelled under the circumstances because our members have been calling day and night, there is an uneasy calm among the entire membership and there is the need for something to be done as soon as possible.

“Like I said, we are talking about the basic necessities of life, the issues of water, food shelter, clothing, ability to be able to pay your daily expenses, things that will enable you live as a human being.” He said
