The Director-General of Ghana Education Service Prof Opoku Amankwa has refuted the claim that over 44,000 teachers left the classroom because of the poor condition of service in the Ghana Education Service.
According to the Director-General of Ghana Education Service, Prof Opoku Amankwa only 293 teachers resign from the teaching Service in the 2021 academic year
He explained that the total number of teachers of the Ghana Education Service on the payroll is 8,209, which comprises 6,834 teaching staff and 1,375 non-teaching staff.
Prof Opoku Amankwa’s explanation comes as the official response to the earlier information that was released some weeks back by the member parliament for Builsa South, Dr. Clement Apaak who doubles as a ranking member of Education in parliament that over 44,000 teachers out of 284,000 teachers left the teaching profession.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education last week came out with their figures that statistics from the Education Management Information Service (EMIS) that Dr. Clement Apaak earlier quoted from was rather 34,434 instead of the 44,000.
But Prof Opoku Amankwa during an interview explained that in determining the number of teachers that left the teaching Service, the right source is the payroll and not the Education Management Information Service (EMIS).
He further explained that any attempt to use the EMIS has a source in determining a number of staff who left the teaching Service will give a deceptive picture because the total attrition represents the number of teachers who left the teaching Service either voluntary or involuntary and which includes vacation of post, resignation, compulsory retirement, termination of appointment and dismissal.
