Reviewed Single spine pay policy report will help reduce labour unrest – Pres. Akufo Addo

The president of of the Republic of Ghana has disclosed that he is hopeful that the review single spine pay policy report from the technical committee that was constituted to review the single spine pay policy will help avert the numerous labour unrest involving public sector workers.

The president Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo made this statement yesterday at the ceremony of May day celebration at the independent square in Accra.

He mentioned that the committee is expected to make recommendations to the government on whether the single spine pay policy is still relevant and make suggestions on what needs to be done if they found the policy is unfit for its purpose.

Talking to thousands of labour unions at the independent square in Accra during the May day celebration the president said “I am happy to announce that following the national labour conference at Kwahu, the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations and the partners have set up a technical committee to review the Single Spine Pay Policy and advice government accordingly. The goal is to find out whether the Single Spine Pay Policy is living up to expectations and if not, find a way forward. I hope that the report which is expected to be ready in July will help to put an end to most of the unrest we see on the labour front involving public sector workers.”

The single spine pay policy that was implemented in 2010 was to help regulate the payment of salaries of public sector workers. Decade after its implementation the policy is yet to be reviewed this year with most experts having the view that the single spine pay policy in its current state is the cause of many agitation and demonstrations among public sector workers in the country.

But the president of the Republic of Ghana His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo is optimistic that the committee’s report will help reduce the several demonstrations among public sector workers.
