The management of the three major teacher unions in the country, the Ghana National Association of Teachers GNAT, National Association of Graduate Teachers NAGRAT, and Coalition of Concern Teachers Ghana CCTGH has called for the introduction of Cost of living allowance (COLA) for teachers and Education Service workers.

According to the teacher unions, the recent increase in prices of fuel without prior notice, the incessant increase in prices of foodstuff and other consumables goods are skyrocketing to the detriment of helpless Ghanaian teachers and citizenry is worrying and disturbing.

They explained that they have recognized the economic challenges that their members (teachers) are facing as well as other public sector workers, even though teachers’ net salaries (take-home pay) do not take teachers home but they still do their best to educate Ghanaian children.

The teacher unions therefore called on government to as a matter of urgency institute a Cost of living Allowance (COLA) allowance for teachers to help cushion them of their meager salaries which is making them to struggle in this economic hardship.

The management of the teacher unions wants the government to Institute this COLA allowance to pull their members (Teachers) out of the economic woods in which teachers find themselves currently.
