The management of the Ghana Education Service yesterday 26th August 2021 organized a press conference to address the concern that was raised by Teacher unions, Ghana National Association of Teachers GNAT, National Association of Graduate Teachers NAGRAT, and Coalition of Concern Teachers Ghana CCTGH, which the unions was invited for a meeting.

According to Director-General of Ghana Education Service, Prof. Opoku Amankwa one of the main concerns raised by the teacher unions in their 10th August 2021 press statement was the fact that teachers are overburden with a lot of workload by GES and for that matter the should be compensated to cushion them for their additional work.

In addressing the contact hours concern, the Director-General of Ghana Education Service stated that as for this moment teachers have not been overburden with any work, what they are doing is just the old contact hours system they are working with and so there is no need to ask for more pay.

In explaining further, Prof. Opoku Amankwa added that the statement that was released by one of the Ghana Education Service Directors in Juaben Municipality that School working hours begins from 8: 00 am to 3:00 pm has not changed anything because in the old system lesson was usually beginning from 7:00 am and ends at 2 pm which is still the same contact hours.

It’s unfortunate because I don’t think any of the article 71 beneficiaries is doing anything outside what law demand of him or her. Why has their salaries increased by that gargantuan amount?
