The Honourable Minister of Education Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum has disclosed that his Ministry and the management of the Ghana Education Service reverted to the trimester system to make teachers happy.

According to Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, the other reason for the reinstatement of the trimester system was that they had information that both semester and trimester systems are effective for pre-tertiary schools because both systems will allow students to attend school for the same number of weeks.

“If going trimester is what would make them happy, since we are going to attain the same goal at the same number of weeks, why not? I didn’t find it difficult at all to say that I would be on the side of the teachers who believe the trimester was better,” Dr. Adutwum said on Citi TV on Monday.

Dr Adutwum added: “In this particular instance, there is no research that says that the semester is better than a trimester. It is just used for convenience around the world. Some of these things are based on convenience. It doesn’t say that once you do a trimester, it is a silver bullet.”

The various teacher unions and other stakeholders under Education criticize the Ministry of Education for the new introduction of the semester system without making broad stakeholder consultation as to whether the system is going to run well.

The union in Education (GNAT, NAGRAT CCTGH, and TEWU) came strongly against the ministry and made it clear that they will resist the semester in basic schools because it will have psychological effects on the children.

The teacher unions also raise allegations that they were not consulted before the introduction of the semester system.

And when the meeting was called by the Ghana Education Service on the issue the ministry of Education rescind it’s earlier directive of the semester system and then introduced the trimester system.
